Key topic and activity plan 2025 of WEC Med Cross-Regional Collaboration Initiative
At this critical moment, the global network of the World Energy Council offers a unique opportunity to share expertise, best practices, and strengthen dialogue on the energy transition. In this spirit, WEC Italy leads the WEC Med Cross-Regional Collaboration Initiative, developed in collaboration with the General Secretariat, national committees from the Mediterranean and Gulf regions, OMEC - Organization Méditerranéenne de l’Energie et du Climat, and other major regional organizations. The project aims to address the energy agendas of countries in the region and promote energy cooperation within the Mediterranean Basin.
The second year of activities for the WEC Med Cross-regional Collaboration Initiative officially kicked off with an international webinar on January 29, 2025. The meeting outlined the annual work plan and explored key topics of the Mediterranean energy transition, enriched by the insights of international attendees, including Masha Lukyanchuk (Regional Manager for Europe, WEC), Michel-Ange Medlej (Regional Manager for Africa, WEC), Matteo Urbani (Senior Energy Analyst, OMEC), as well as expert contributors Sandro Furlan (Political Analyst/Support to Business Sub-Saharan Africa & Americas, Eni Public Affairs), Valeria Palmisano (Senior Manager EU Institutional Relations, Snam), Igor Malgieri (Head of International Affairs, Edison), Nicolò Sartori (International Institutional Affairs, Head of Bilateral Affairs & Country Analysis, Enel), alongside representatives from WEC national committees and key regional associations involved in the initiative.
Among the strategic priorities for 2025: energy security aspects, digitalization, technological roadmaps, and the socio-economic acceptance of energy transitions. These themes will be explored through strategic sessions, workshops, and collaborative discussions. The results of this year’s work will be compiled into the Second edition of the WEC Med Energy Transition Checklist, which will be presented in the second half of the year at a public international event dedicated to the Mediterranean region.
